Practical Tips for Settling In Quickly After a Move

October 22, 2020

A lot is involved in moving homes. Even when you work with a reputable real estate agent like Brigette Modglin, finding the right home can be a process. And once that part is done, you still have to get settled into your new home and adjust to your new surroundings. Whether you’re moving locally or long-distance, following these tips and resources can help make this stage go a little smoother:

Utilities and Other Obligations

First things first: you will need to handle essential obligations like setting up utilities and getting your driver’s license. If possible, do these things a couple of weeks before moving.

● Transfer or establish new utility services like water, gas, and electricity, depending on whether you’re moving locally or long-distance.

● Set up your TV and internet connections.

● Get a new driver’s license and registration if necessary; research the nearest DMV office ahead of time.

● Update your address with any agencies and businesses necessary.

● Change the locks on your doors, and make sure you have a security system in place.

Improving the Home

Concerning the home itself, you will want to evaluate what improvements need to be made and prioritize their importance so that you can determine where to start.

● If you haven’t already, have the roof, foundation, electrical, plumbing, HVAC system, and other essential components inspected, and fix any issues as soon as possible.

● Give your home a good deep cleaning, or hire a professional to do it.

● If your home will need any remodeling, consider starting with ones that promise a high ROI, such as renovating the kitchen and/or bathrooms, installing hardwood floors, and replacing the entry door.

● Figure out some DIY projects that you can tackle, such as painting the walls, changing out light fixtures, and upgrading cabinet hardware.

● Give your home’s exterior some attention by shaping up the landscaping, putting in a new mailbox, and updating the house numbers.

Putting Down Roots

As you’re getting your home the way you want it, think of ways you can get to know your new neighborhood or city.

● Go for walks through the neighborhood to meet the residents.

● Make a point to attend community events and visit local shops and other business establishments.

● Use social media to find a local hobby or interest group that will allow you to meet new people.

● Adopt an overall willingness to get involved in the community by volunteering, seeing how you can participate at your child’s school, and any other ways that help you to put down roots.

Moving homes can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re still in the unpacking phase. But following the tips and resources listed here can help you get settled in quickly and reduce some of the stress involved, whether you’re moving across town or across the country.
